A truck transports a 115’ long steel girder onto the NV approach and waits for off loading. Attached to the top flanges of the girder, above the end plate, are temporary support brackets the will suspend the girder in-place from the top of the pier cap until PT bars are installed through the holes in the end plate and attach the girder to the pier cap face.

In the Obayashi / PSM, JV precast yard located near Boulder City, workers utilize a rubber tire gantry crane to hoist a 115’ long steel girder onto a truck for transport to the bridge site.

The North highline hoists and transports a steel girder out onto the Arch for placement between Pier 10 and 11 spandrel column pier caps. On the NV approach deck, several girders are stage for sequenced placement. The South highline is in use, delivering materials to waiting crews on the Arch. To the bottom left of the picture, the orange stripping platform is cantilevered over the completed right barrier railing to allow worker access to the underside of the deck. Across the canyon, a Grove RT635C Crane sets on the AZ approach deck, above Pier 14, servicing crews working below on the AZ skewback.

On the Nevada approach, piers 3, 4, and 5 are visible. On the Arch, all spandrel piers are completed with climbing scaffolding attached to piers 6-LT\RT and 13-LT columns. Pier 13-RT column has system scaffolding encasing it for worker access.

The north highline crane transports a steel girder out for erection between Pier 10 and 11 spandrel column pier caps. The South highline is returning after delivering crews to work areas on the Arch.

Parked partially on the bridge deck at span 1, Olsen Beal crews attach highline crane rigging and prepare a steel girder for off loading. Safety lines have been installed to the tops of the web flanges. Temporary support brackets will be attached to web flanges above the end plates prior to setting this girder into its final position between two spandrel column pier caps.

From right to left side of the picture – Spandrel Pier 6 is visible with climbing scaffolding attached to the left & right columns. Piers 7 through 13 are completed with pier caps in place. Steel girders spanning between pier 9 and 10 (span 10) and between 10 and 11 (span11) are erected with access scaffolding visible, suspended from the pier caps.

Spanning the canyon above the bridge are the twin cables of the highline crane systems.

These girders, weighing upwards of 50 tons will be transported by the highline crane and placed to span between the spandrel pier caps, on top of which, the concrete roadway deck will be constructed.

Spandrel Pier 6-right is erected to segment 18, Pier 6-left to segment 16. Utilizing the highline, Olsen Beal crews are transported off of Pier 6-left in a man basket. Pier 6-right is completed with its 18th segment set. Further out on the Arch, Pier 7 is completed with the falsework and formwork for the pier cap in place. Spanning between the left and right ribs of the Arch at each pier, precast concrete panels encase the steel strut members.

On the Nevada approach, a delivered precast spandrel column segment waits to be transported out onto the Arch by the highline crane system. Crews attach temporary platforms to the sides of the segments for worker access. Steel post tensioning rods are pre-loaded into the vertical ducts in the segment walls along with a survey prism, attached to the upper portion of this segment prior to transportation.

On the Arch, Olsen Beal crews are erecting precast concrete spandrel pier segments at Piers 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12. Temporary platforms are attached to the sides of the segments for worker access.

On the Nevada approach, pier cap falsework is being constructed. Once finished, they will be transported out and attached to, and span between, the completed pier columns.

The left and right Arch ribs are constructed out to segment 12 with reinforcing cages set for segments 12. Obayashi / PSM, JV carpenter crews prepare to launch the inner core formwork of the form travelers and install top slab formwork.

The Arch strut, connecting the two Arch ribs, is constructed at segment 7. On top of the Arch ribs, at this location, precast column segments for Pier 6 will be erected. A temporary bridge allows worker’s access to the Arch from the existing US93 near the Nevada hairpin area.

The bridge alignment looking West from Arizona towards the Nevada approach spans. Pictured from bottom to top.

Visible is the formwork for the Arch starter segments attached to the Pier 5 Skewback footing. Above the footing, crews on Pier 5 continue to erect precast segments. All of the precast segments for Piers 1 through 4 have been erected and the pier caps are in various stages of construction. Grey colored temporary bracing can been seen attached between Pier 4 and Pier 3 and between Pier 3 and Pier 2. Overhead, the cableway cranes provide personnel access and material deliveries to the pier columns.
